Bangladesh has started playing Tests at home after about five and a half months. The Tigers face Sri Lanka at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium in Chattogram. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. At the end of the first day, Dimuth Karunaratne's team is in a good position with 258 runs for 4 wickets.
Losing the toss, Mominul Haque started fielding. Fast bowler Shoriful Islam hit the ball directly to Oshada Fernando's pad. The umpire did not respond to the strong plea of the bowlers and fielders. As a result, Tigers captain Mominul took the review. However, that review was refused, and the hosts has become shocked at the beginning of the day.
Sri Lanka did not get the opening pair as expected after going down to bat before winning the toss. They lost the first wicket after adding only 23 runs to the team scorecard. After a long absence, Bangladesh got success by attacking spinner Nayeem Hasan. In his first over, Nayeem returned with Sri Lankan captain Karunaratne to the dressing room with just 9 runs.
Another opener, Fernando, settled down at the crease despite a quick departure of Karunaratne. But Naeem also returned him. Fernando was caught behind off Naeem's off-stamp. Before returning to the dressing room, the right-handed batsman made 36 runs off 76 balls. Then when Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis are leading the team, Bangladesh failed in another review.
Mendis and Matthews ruled the second session. However, Mendis could not last long after picking up fifty off 93 balls. Although he returned with a personal 54 off Taijul Islam, Mathews got his life back after a half-century. Using this opportunity, Mathews also took his first century against Bangladesh. The experienced batsman picked up a century off 183 balls.
Meanwhile, returning to the field in white after a long time, Shakib got a wicket. He returned to Dhananjaya de Silva, who came down to bat at number five. In Shakib's length delivery, the ball went straight and hit Dhananjay's pad. Mahmudul Hasan Joy palmed that ball brilliantly. However, the umpire did not respond to Shakib's request, and he took immediate review. As seen in the review, the ball hits the bat before hitting the pad. As a result, Dhananjaya was dismissed for 6 runs.
The Tigers bowled in a controlled manner on the first day but could not push the Sri Lankan camp. Two fast bowlers Shoriful and Khaled Ahmed were wicketless in 24 overs. Another experienced batsman Dinesh Chandimal, who is unbeaten on 34, will bat on the second day with Mathews, who has scored 114 runs.
First day short scores:
Sri Lanka 258/4 (90 overs),
Matthews 114 * (213),
Kusal Mendis 54 (131),
Nayeem Hasan 2/71,
Shakib 1/27.
